“Alright, are you ready for this?” John glanced at Enora.

She took a deep breath, then let it back out. A small fog appeared in front of her, and she nodded. “I think so.”

She twirled her sword, which now had a frosty sheen, and John nodded in admiration. She hadn’t been able to turn herself into a frost mage (strictly speaking, it was a possibility, but it would have reduced all her stats and essentially reset her to a Level 5, which they couldn’t afford to do), but she had certainly done her best to equip herself with the tools she would need to stay alive. In many ways, she was likely more powerful than even John, which was an odd feeling for him.

They stood on the small platform overlooking the bottom of the Pit, ready for their second try. Enora went first, jumped down onto the small rock, and then sprang through the tentacles to land on the combat platform. John came next, performing the actions flawlessly. As he came out of his roll, he drew out Kelvinite Zero, and the monster slowly emerged from the vent of the structure.

Just as they had rehearsed, he drove the spear into the monster’s head as soon as it was in sight. Almost instantly, the creature began to cool, and for a moment, it slowed down. Enora then stepped forward and bashed her shield into the creature. The weapon registered the attack as a block, and a resounding boom shook the platform as a small shockwave shattered the creature into rubble. John grinned as the second of the monsters emerged. He rushed forward and did the same thing, and Enora smashed it to bits as well. The gravel crumbled back into the ocean of lava, and John bounced on the balls of his feet.

And then came the next wave.

Half a dozen monsters came rumbling up from the depths, including the two they had just smashed into bits. John scowled in annoyance, then pointed Kelvinite Zero at the closest one and unleashed a flurry of frost. The creature was driven back under the blast of ice, but it didn’t die. Enora rushed forward, though, and drew her sword.

Instantly, snow began to fall, and John smiled. Enora pointed the weapon at the closest of the monsters and rushed forward, driving it in to the hilt. There was a hiss as the ice penetrated to its core, and then she bashed it in the face with her shield. The whole thing crumbled, and she spun to the next one. Meanwhile, John did the same thing, jabbing his spear into the monsters and smashing them, though he did so with his fists. It stung, but cold things tended to shatter pretty easily, so it wasn’t the hardest thing in the world.

At least… At first.

As they fought, it quickly became obvious that the monsters were crumbling, absorbing a bit of heat from the lava, and then rising back up to continue the fight.
